I am doing a tutorial on images, and in it is covered compression of raster images...I wanted to include some bmp images in this tutorial, but in Netscape, they didn't show up. My netscape has been on fritz and been meaning to reinstall. Anyway, is this really true that netscape doesn't support bmps???

Hi Arielladog,

It apears that is the case I tried it on mine (NN 4.73 not on the fritz), since I had never tried to use bmp's on a web site, and got no image display.. Oh Well another strike against NetScape.. :(

Hi,

I wouldn't call a strike unless if you meant it as in bowling. It's actually a good thing. Bitmaps are huge and their loading time horrendous in comparison to GIFS and JPGs. At any rate...an interesting side note: if you load a bmp into FP Xpress (the crippled, but freebie, Front Page wysiwyg that comes on the Windows cdRom) it will automatically make a gif. Then again I could have been asleep and have just dreamt it.

And.... the humble Paint utility that comes with Windows will convert bmp's to either gif's (including transparency) and jpg's.

In a real page, I would never really use a bmp....I just wanted it for an image tutorial (the part on compression formats), but I guess I really can't use it. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't dreaming that Netscape didn't support it.
