I don't know if this is the right message board, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good reliable (and inexpensive)web host that offers at least 50 mb of disk space & good tech support - and where you can transfer a real .com name (not use their free extensions). Thanx alot for your help.

Hi aimee002, and welcome to the forum.

50 MB is quite a bit of space. Most of the decent webhosts out there will gladly offer 10 or 15 MB per month for anywhere between $14 and $25 bucks a month, but for 50 MB - honestly I'm not sure!

If I may ask aimee002, why so much space? Also, are you planning on setting up a domain (www.yourname.com/net/org)? Some hosts charge a nominal fee to set that up for you plus internic fees (usually 75 bucks for 2 years).

One final question - how many visitors do you expect per month? Some sites are more than willing to give you space on their host, but then whack you with huge download charges - remember, everytime someone hits your homepage and everything loads, that's considered a download.

Post back, and I'm sure we'll find you a good host for a reasonable price!

Thanks, and good luck!

Jim

I'd like to start out with around 10-15, but have the option of increasing it. My goal is to start a web design business that serves local small businesses and sell basic 3-5 page business websites & resell the webspace at a monthly rate as well(I noticed there are alot of reseller sites). I'm new at this, so I appreciate any advice you have for me.

Hey aimee002,

No problem there. I've been using Earthlink for about 5 years now, and they have always been excellent to me. One of the nice things is that they offer a 6 MB website fromm the second you sign-up with them. That's often a great place to start. I also use Earthlink to host my domain (gzaz.com) as well as my personal website (which I will never give out the address to because it's embarrassingly bad :D)

I am sure other members and moderators will want to add to this list, so I won't go on until we have a few more responses, OK? Just one thing - reselling a site is a great business, but it does require a bit of a presence before people are willing to ante up.

Good luck!

Jim

Hi gzaz Jim,
Thanx for the advice. I'll check them out.
I think you may have misunderstood my post though. I know alot of people who live in my area (small business owners- like contractors, realtors, daycare providers for example) who are willing to pay to have a basic advertising type website made. By "reselling" I was referring to the web space (I guess my post was a little ambiguous) there are reseller host packages where you can have say 10 web sites all with unique .com names & they charge you one reseller rate. You in turn charge your customers a monthly fee for the hosting. Some of them even offer customizable control panels for each of your clients sites so they can update their own sites. I'd be interested to know if anyone is familiar with this. Thanx again.

Thanx for the recommendation. They seem good, so I signed up with them. Do you have any idea how long it takes to get a domain name transferred and also, where is the login screen? - I thought it was on the main page when I signed up and now I can't find it anywhere on the site. Thanx again!

Hi aimee:

- What do you mean by "login screen"??

- It will take a couple days to get the domain transferred. The way it worked for me was that the company with whom I registered the domain sent me a form to fill to confirm the domain transfer. Then, once I sent that back to the domain company (not digitalfairplex), my domain was transferred.

If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask :).

Jon.

How do you access your account with them and upload files if you don't log on to the service??

That was what I said they lacked (a "control panel"). To create emails and for other misc changes to your account, you need to email them. You can use an ftp program (or a web publishing wizard) to upload files. They said they are working on their control panel (on thier site, the form fields are there, they just don't work --> ???).

Yup. I've used ftp and FrontPage publisher, they both worked fine (btw, I used CuteFTP too).

Thanx alot for your help jon - I just have one more question. I'm having problems transferring my domain to digialfairplex because it says the name server has an invalid character in it. The only thing I'm sending is what digitalfairplex put on the form : ns.digitalfairplex.com and ns2.digitalfairplex.com.(the ip nos. are ok) Would you happen to know anything about this. Thanx again.

If you are using CuteFTP or WS FTP you would have to type in server name ftp.digitalfairplex.com

Hope this helps,
amberbot

I must be dense or something, cause I still can't seem to get my network solutions application to go through. Looks like I'm going to have to make that long distance call to Virginia afterall- LOL!

Hi Aimee:

Are you transferring your domain? When I signed up, they did that for me. I just had to authorize it through email with network solutions. All I did was reply to the mail, and fill in some "Y" in some fields (nothing to do with ns.di...plex.com). Sorry, I know I'm not being of much help :(.

You could always email them about it (sounding frustrated), telling them to call you ;).

Jon.

yeah, I did that too - they did the form, and I just sent it to network solutions. But, for some reason they keep sending it back saying there's an invalid char () in lines 7a and 8a. DigitalFairplex can't help me until I get the technical contact changed over ((I sent it just like they sent it to me so go figure!)

Hi Aimee:

Check lines 7 and 8. I think you need to enter a 'Y' on one of those (or both).

Hope ya get it transferred :).

I'm thinking of moving my site - kind of a pain because I just moved "off-campus" (where I had no server-side access) a couple of months ago. I looked at csoft.net and they looked good, but now I'm looking at http://jumpline.com/
They seem to have a good variety of plans and I got good customer service on my one phone call. Basically, I like them because for $15/month I'll get the space and traffic I need (not a whole lot, but it is, I think, 50 and 3000, can't remeber) AND I can use MySQL which I want to learn, AND they use a shell or whatever to connect with the database so I won't have to give my local cable monopolist $90/mo instead of $30 just to telnet. Some security nonsense scam if you ask me - how old is telnet anyway?

gzazJim
11-03-2000, 09:54 PM
Hey mmi,

Telnet has been around at LEAST since the 70's... I vaguely remember Telnetting into a server with a plug-in modem (I mean the kind that you plug the Handset of the phone into!).
Ahh, the good old days of playing "Zork" and "Star Trek" over the GE mainframe...

By the way mmi, I dig your page - I went to school at URI and was present at the closing (heck, nearly collapsing) of the once infamous "Iggy's."

Regards,

Jim
