I've been debating on which server-end technology to learn because, well, learning how to work with 20 different acronyms can be exhausting--I want to make sure that it's the right one(s). I know Flash MX is going to be joining ColdFusion in ColdFusion MX--I am going to be working with Flash, so it seems like the right choice. If you can write Shopping Carts and Search Engines in CF, does that mean that I could get away without having to learn PHP. Is CF everything its cracked up to be? Thanks for any insight on this...

I've been hearing lots of good things about ColdFusion. I wish I had the time to learn it, I probably will this summer while school isn't going on. I'm not sure how well it interfaces with databases though, which is what I love about PHP. PHP seems to be built specifically for the purpose of web-based database apps. Anyway, I'd be interested in reading up on ColdFusion as well, if anyone has any good links.

Here is something that might get us started...

Hi ColdFusion does eveything PHP does. It is easy to learn. Even I can do it. ;)
Go see my web site at web4uk.tv or my avatar site I did this afternoon. both linked below. Or the one I did for norman's scripts below. Or this one I started on Friday.
http://www.web4uk.tv/gaming/index.cfm the admin section is open.
they are all CF. The sites link to a MySQL dbase running on Linux. You can go with Windows Sun or Unix and most databases are supported if not go with a native driver and write your own SQL.
Madcat that turorial at Webmonkey is ok but you should buy Ben Fortas book if you can. Its cheap, available on-line and comes with a very usful CD full of examples and code and special tags etc.
All the links you need for CF are probably here

Enjoy
PS get a 60 day trial copy of ColdFusion Studio and try it out. It writes ColdFusion for you like an HTML editor does. If your more designer than scripter get a copy of UltraDEV.
All the stuff is at MacroMedia
